DIY Halloween Costume // Zebra (How-to)

DIY-mask, DIY-ears, zebra-costume, halloween

Halloween is two days away!  Yes... only two! And if you're like me, you have been too crazed to even begin to think about what you're going to be.  With Halloween falling on a Thursday, many celebrated last week, many will celebrate this weekend (some both... no judgement), and some will stick to handing out candy to trickier-treaters.  However you choose to celebrate, don't let not having a costume stop you.  When trying to decided what I could dress up as, that would be quick and cost-effective, I turned to my closet.  I already had a sequins zebra dress (I mean, who doesn't) and ears and a mask are simply enough, so I went for it.  This would also look great with an all black dress or black tights and a black and white stripped top.  The possibilities are endless.

What you need

  • 1 piece of zebra print felt paper
  • 2 pipe cleaners (I used black and white, but black would work well too)
  • Hot glue gun with 3 glue sticks
  • 1 basic eye-mask (could also DIY with additional felt)
  • 1 black headband

Directions...

  • Starting with the ears,  take the two pipe cleaners and make a loop to create the ear shape, leaving enough room at the bottom to be able to secure to the headband.

  • Place the ears on felt and trace the inside, then cut out the shape and set a side.

  • Turn the felt paper over and trace the outline of the mask; then cut up and set a side.

  • Now that you have all of your pieces, it's time to assemble them.

  • Starting by making sure your glue stick is hot enough, cover the top of the mask in glue, then place then line the felt up (back side to the mask) and press firm.  Now do the same to the bottom half.
  • Not pictured... Glue 5-7 black and white feathers to the top center of your mask, creating the "Zebra mohawk"  (I also attached fake eyelashes to mine but the minute I walked outside they flew off, but feel free to add that step back in, just make sure you secure well)

  • Take the felt cutouts for the ear and outline with hot glue; then line up with pipe cleaner and press firmly. Let cool for 3-4 min.

  • Take the ears and line them up on the head band to be approx. 3" apart.  Wrap the edge under the headband then around from right to left to fully secure.
